Reporting on a Racial Divide

November 20, 2017 at 7:00 pm

The racial divide in the United States is as deep as it is disturbing. That fact is underlined by the reporting that Race/Related, our newsletter and multimedia reporting project exploring race in America, has undertaken for more than a year.

In response to questions about the recent events in Charlottesville, we invited readers to participate in an Insider-only conference call between John Eligon, a national correspondent covering race, and Sheryl Gay Stolberg, a domestic affairs correspondent. The conversation, moderated by the national editor Marc Lacey, mined the front-line experiences of Times journalists around the country.

How do Times journalists work across desks to write about, and explore, the cause of the racial divide? How are White House policies helping or hurting race relations, and how will they continue to play out on the national stage? Is white nationalism really increasing its reach, and if so, with whom?
